Care & Handling Guidelines
Encaustic
Safety: Always be sure to hang larger artwork using hardware rated for the weight of the piece. When mounting to drywall, use either a stud, drywall anchors, or the multi-nail professional picture hangers appropriate for the weight of your piece.
Care: Always hang or store encaustic artwork in climate-controlled spaces, avoiding extreme heat or cold. Encaustic medium (beeswax mixed with damar resin) softens and begins to lose structure when above 120°F/49°C and can become brittle and prone to cracking when below 40°F/4°C.
As with any artwork, hang the piece away from direct sunlight to avoid fading or softening.
Cleaning & maintenance: For the first 6-18 months new encaustic paintings may develop a dull, hazy film on the surface called "bloom." Details can be more difficult to see. This is a normal part of the curing process. To remove the bloom and restore the glossy sheen of the encaustic (as well as remove any dust that may have accumulated) gently buff the surface using a circular motion with a dry, lint-free cotton cloth or nylon stockings. Do not use any chemical cleaners or solvents on the encaustic surface.
Encaustic pieces at Spirited Art & Design are sometimes framed behind glass to keep dust and cobwebs from gathering on protruding details that are difficult to clean, however encaustic does not need to be behind glass and generally is not. You may use your own discretion when deciding whether to keep it behind glass.
The pieces that are framed behind glass are designed to be fairly easy to open and care for. Some of the frames have faces that open like doors for opening and gently buffing the encaustic. The hinges on these are small and very delicate, so always remove the piece from the wall and handle the glass door with care, fully supporting it with a rolled up cloth while it is open in order to protect the integrity of the hinges.
Other frames have two screws in the top panel of the front trim so that the top piece of trim can be removed and the glass or plexiglass can be carefully slid out for any cleaning or buffing that may need to be done. Glass and plexiglass can easily scratch, so be sure to handle with care. Avoid scratching these surfaces with jewelry, laying them on unclean abrasive surfaces, or wiping them with abrasive cloths or cleaning materials.
Stained Glass
Safety: It is always best to transport or store stained glass vertically, rather than horizontally. Holding a piece out flat puts significant strain on the came and solder holding the glass together and can cause it to bow or break.
Handle the piece with care and keep it away from small children and pets. Most traditional stained glass artwork, including work made at Spirited Art & Design, is soldered with a lead-tin alloy. Always wash your hands after handling the piece, and do not place it near food or areas where children might mouth or touch it.
Never use suction cups to hang pieces in windows. They degrade and can lose grip over time, causing the piece to fall and shatter. Secure the piece directly to the window trim or into a stud or anchor in drywall. Use sturdy hooks, nails, and/or chains rated for the weight of the piece.
Cleaning & maintenance: Never use standard household glass cleaners as they can strip patinas and weaken solder lines. Use a dry cotton cloth to buff the surface. For pieces that have become especially dirty, dip a soft scrub brush in a mixture of warm water, a little baking soda, and a few drops of mild dish soap. Gently scrub the surface, then rinse and thoroughly pat dry to preserve the shine. Do not let the piece air-dry. Over time, due to exposure to the air and humidity the metal solder and came will naturally oxidize and change color. This is a normal feature of stained glass work.
